Okay, so I know this guy who knows this guy who knew this guy who read on Gizmodo that MacDailyNews has a source who leaked that the MacBook Touch will be coming in October. Obviously, it’s just a rumor, and we’ve heard such rumors before, but here’s what has the Apple web abuzz:

This source apparently leaked wireless iTunes a week before it was announced.

Steve Jobs mentioned in the Apple earnings report yesterday that Apple’s “…busy finishing several more wonderful new products to launch in the coming months.” He also promised, “…technologies and features that others can’t match.”

October’s a great time for a device, considering the shopping season.

People really, really want this to be true.

Think MacBook screen, possibly a bit smaller, in glass with iPhone-like, but fuller-featured Multi-Touch. Gesture library. Full Mac OS X. This is why they bought P.A. Semi. Possibly with Immersion’s haptic tech. Slot-loading SuperDrive. Accelerometer. GPS. Pretty expensive to produce initially, but sold at “low” price that will reduce margins. Apple wants to move these babies. And move they will. This is some sick ####. App Store-compatible, able to run Mac apps, too. By October at the latest.

Whether this Apple Tablet comes to fruition, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. If you really need to find out ahead of time, find out who makes those fingerprint screen wipes for the iPhone and iPod touch and see if they all suddenly start buying boats and big TVs.

Apple has also released iTunes 7.7, which has support for iPhone OS 2.0, App Store Applications, and the ability to be controlled by the “Remote” application that is available on the App Store. iTunes 7.7 is available through Software Update.
Finally! We can all download 3rd party applications for the iPhone with no h4×0r1ng required! The App Store is hidden from iTunes, but, if you search the Application name in iTunes, it will show up. You can also access the App Store from the App Store application on your iPhone or iPod touch.

With the recent release of Firefox 3, Safari finally is seeing some serious competition in the browser space. Its reign as the fastest browser on the Mac seems to be over for the time being, and Firefox’s usage share continues to climb both on the Mac and on Windows.

Now, this isn’t to say I don’t like Safari; in fact, I use it as my everyday browser. It’s just that the competition is finally really heating up, and it’s about time Apple made some improvements to set Safari apart once again.

1. Make the search box customizable

This is something that Apple should have done long ago. Even Microsoft allows users of Internet Explorer to customize the search bar. I realize that Eric Schmidt sits on the board at Apple, and I love Google, don’t get me wrong, but this isn’t groundbreaking territory here. Sometimes you just don’t find what you’re looking for on Google and you want to try Yahoo! or (dare I say it) Live search.

It doesn’t end with just your run-of-the-mill search engines either. Firefox allows users to add searches of eBay, Amazon, ESPN, Technorati, Weather.com and more, right into the toolbar. It’s about time that Apple allowed its users the same “free reign” over their search box.

2. Add a one-click “New tab” button to the toolbar
Once again, not groundbreaking territory. IE7 and Firefox both have it. I know there’s command+t and double-clicking on an empty space on the tab bar, but they can’t substitute for the convenience of an easy, one-click, “new tab” solution.

3. Turn up the speed dial
With the release of Firefox 3, Safari is not the speed king on the Mac anymore. Apple should concentrate a lot of their energy into speeding up performance so that Safari can reign again with the same comfortable lead it once held.

4. Add an “awesome bar” equivalent.

This new feature of Firefox saves you a lot of typing and searching through your bookmarks. It’s a real timesaver, especially if you have a lot of bookmarks. I know some people find this kind of clunky, so for those people, there should be an option to turn it off.

5. Add a “live bookmarks” equivalent.

Safari’s RSS reader is excellent, but wouldn’t it be nice to put some of the feeds you check every day right in your bookmarks bar and view them in a drop down menu rather than having to actually open the feed in the reader? This would be especially great for news headlines or a forum or blog that you frequent.

6. Improve Security
PayPal generated some buzz in the Apple community lately when they snubbed Safari from their list of “safer browsers” due to it’s lack of anti-phishing features. Firefox’s instant site ID feature is really handy and accessible in identifying whether or not a website is a fake, and at the very least, Apple should add similar feature. Ideally though, they would do a lot more than just that.

7. Add live previews of tabs.
This is a features that exists in Opera, and IE has a similar solutions with its “quick tabs” interface. Great for when you have a bunch of tabs open and can’t really read what’s on the tab bar.

So what are your thoughts? I would really like to hear from some of you loyal Safari users out there what you would like to see in Safari 4.0. I’d also like to hear from those of you who are using other browsers and what would compell you to switch to Safari. Leave your comments below. [VIA]
Now that Apple has lowered iPhone prices, more and more consumers are poised to be using their iPhone to search Wikipedia. According to Powerset, the feature set for on-the-go browsing makes it “…the best way to currently search and read Wikipedia on your iPhone.”

Apple may agree, apparently. Though they usually change their featured Web Apps daily, Powerset was featured for two consecutive days once it was launched.

If you have an iPhone, you just need to go to www.powerset.com and it will work automatically.

A recent blog details the trouble, which seems to be apersistent blank screen problem.

After a reboot, or on wake from sleep, the machine refuses to acknowledge the presence of a display, either internal or external. From that point on, the computer never regains its displays—not after a reboot, etc. Subsequent debugging indicates that the machine is misidentifying its NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT card as the MacBook’s Intel X3100 card. This issue is known to affect at least 50 people—a group of affected users has formed a Google Spreadsheet in order to document and organize cases.

Apple recommends users replace the logic board, but doing this isn’t solving the problem for some users. And, of course, the problem seems to surface shortly after the expiration of the computer’

s default warranty, meaning those inflicted are paying about $400 for a fix that may not actually fix anything.

If you’

re noticing similar behavior, we recommend you join the Apple discussion forum to gather/offer possible solutions, or, at the least, to be counted. If this does prove to be a widespread problem, the more people who join the discussion, the sooner Apple may address the issue.

Yesterday, the US Patent & Trademark Office published Apple’s latest trademark, titled “Snow Leopard,” under application 7749408sn6.

According to Apple’s Snow Leopard webpage, “The next major version of the world’s most advanced operating system, Mac OS X, changes more than its spots, it changes focus. Taking a break from adding new features, Snow Leopard—scheduled to ship in about a year—builds on Leopard’s enormous innovations by delivering a new generation of core software technologies that will streamline Mac OS X, enhance its performance, and set new standards for quality. Snow Leopard dramatically reduces the footprint of Mac OS X, making it even more efficient for users, and giving them back valuable hard drive space for their music and photos.”

Apple filed their trademark under International Class 009 covering computer software and computer operating system software. Apple asserts a claim of priority based on Trinidad and Tobago application number 39830 and claims ownership of U.S. Registration Number 3386175.

Apple claims Snow Leopard will include out-of-the-box support for Microsoft Exchange 2007, and will introduce a new set of technologies, bringing unrivaled support for multicore systems to Mac OS X called “Grand Central,” extend 64-bit technology to support enormous amounts of RAM, and introduce QuickTime X, a streamlined, next-generation platform that advances modern media and Internet standards. Mac OS X “Snow Leopard” will most likely to be in retail stores by fall of 2009.
