06.04.08iPhone in Japanese
Here’s the latest regional mobile carrier to add to the long list of those who are about to release the iPhone in their areas. Softbank of Japan has announced that it has sealed an agreement with Apple regarding the distribution of the iPhone in Japan. Following the other announcements of mobile carriers who snagged an iPhone distribution deal with Apple, Softbank has issued a one sentence press release announcing the agreement.
SOFTBANK MOBILE Corp. today announced it has signed an agreement with Apple® to bring the iPhone™ to Japan later this year.
Interestingly, the announcement was enough to stir a raucous since it was previously rumored that NTT Docomo was supposed to get the iPhone distribution rights in Japan, being a more established mobile carrier than Softbank. What the reasons were behind this decision to give the distribution rights to Softbank, only Apple knows. NTT Docomo still has a chance to get the same rights, though, should Apple decide to grant the same multiple distribution channels given to mobile carriers in other countries.
In the meantime, let’s all wait for a couple of more days to find out if Apple will announce more details regarding the iPhone’s regional distribution plan during the WDDC on Monday. Of course, that’s on top of the most awaited announcement on the new iPhone.
